For existing SBEM Practitioners

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) route
Existing SBEM practitioners can apply via the APEL route for Level 3, 4 or 5 qualifications. This process involves an initial application and once accepted you will then be individually assessed against the requirements of the National Occupational Standards for Energy Assessors.

The APEL and APEL Fast Track route is open to a wide range of applicants such as Part L (iSBEM) Competent Persons, CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants and existing Carbon Checker users. The BRE will help identify any areas requiring attention.

The BRE is initially concentrating on APEL Level 4 applications and will offer Level 3 and 5 in due course.

Level 3 – for simple existing buildings with commonly occurring characteristics that can be modelled using approved SBEM software such as BuildDesk Carbon Checker. This qualification level covers the majority of the commercial EPCs required by the market.

Level 4 – for both new and more complex existing buildings that can be modelled using approved SBEM software such as BuildDesk Carbon Checker.

Level 5 – for the most complex new and existing buildings that will need to be modelled using Dynamic Simulation methods. SBEM software such as BuildDesk Carbon Checker is not suitable for this category of building.
