BuildDesk creates new Energy Design training for the Competent Person Scheme

10th August 2007

As a new scheme member of Faero Ltd, BuildDesk – a leading supplier of energy efficiency software tools, services and consultancy for architects, engineers and developers – now offers a tailored Competent Person training course.

In April 2007, Faero Ltd launched the Competent Person Scheme for the calculation of CO2 emission rates for new dwellings to address Part L1A of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. These new, stricter Building Regulations require the submission of CO2 emission rate calculations for all new homes. BuildDesk’s training course, based on its industry-leading Energy Design SAP 2005 software, prepares professionals for Faero Ltd’s qualifying examination to become a Competent Person.

Specialised expertise for a growing market
Competent Persons qualified and registered under the Scheme will provide energy efficiency advice to help house builders and designers comply with the stringent requirements of the Building Regulations.

Steve Channon, BuildDesk Development Manager, explains why becoming a Competent Person with BuildDesk is a smart move. “There is a growing need for energy specialists who can provide the right design advice – quickly and simply. Registered Competent Persons may have their CO2 calculations accepted at face value by building control authorities, smoothing the way for successful Building Regulations submissions. And our combination of approved software and training is designed so that BuildDesk-trained Competent Persons can deliver truly first-rate advice. In the future, these people will be highly sought after.”

BuildDesk-trained Competent Persons will be well-positioned to quickly upgrade their qualifications to become On-Construction Domestic Energy Assessors when new requirements come into force in January 2008.

The BuildDesk Energy Design advantage
The latest version of BuildDesk’s Energy Design software incorporates recent changes to the Building Regulations. Combined with the close support BuildDesk offers its users, the software provides real long-term benefits. Says Steve Channon: “Energy Design users have a distinct advantage. We partner with them to offer industry-leading software at a competitive price, tailored training courses, and ongoing advice and support. Our comprehensive approach ensures users get the best performance from Energy Design, learn how to successfully approach the Competent Person examination and, once qualified, assist designers with exceptional energy efficiency advice.”

About the course
BuildDesk’s first Competent Person training course took place on 24-25 July 2007, and more courses are scheduled for the coming months at BuildDesk in Bridgend, UK. Courses are limited to 12 participants and balance practical and theoretical training to provide an understanding of the technical and regulatory issues surrounding the energy efficiency of dwellings. Once qualified, BuildDesk-trained Competent Persons will be listed on BuildDesk’s website.
