Thermal Bridging
The significance of Thermal Bridging, as a potentially major source of fabric heat losses, is increasingly understood. Improving the U-values for the main building fabric without accurately addressing the Thermal Bridging is no longer an option.


Types of Thermal Bridging
Thermal bridging for repeating thermal bridges such as timber studs and joists should be included in the elemental U-value calculation.

Thermal bridging for non repeating elements should be assessed in the whole building SBEM or SAP calculations. Buildings can follow Accredited or Enhanced Construction Details to limit the effects of thermal bridging or each thermal bridge can be assessed individually.

Linear thermal transmission losses, known as psi values can be found at junctions between elements such as floors and walls or corners.

Thermal point losses, known as chi values, occur at brackets or fixings that penetrate insulation layers in the construction.
